FAQs - Zea Essentials

100% Pure Essential Oils

Are Zea Essentials Organic?

All Zea Essentials are organically sourced and undergo testing to ensure they comply with our clean and pure guarantee. They are 100% pure and free from harmful pesticides.

Are Zea Essentials Certified Organic?

We work with farmers and producers that do not use pesticides or harsh chemicals in the growth and harvesting of their plantations. In many cases, we work with certified organic producers that have to adhere to international standards (i.e., COSMOS). Our quality assurance program quarantines all incoming batches until testing is complete and is marked against the suppliers.

For some essential oils, "certified" organic is not possible. This is normally the case when an essential oil is wild-harvested and no plantations have been established - such is the case with our signature essential oil, Australian Kunzea. However, we still ensure that the essential oils are organically sourced and that no chemicals or pesticides are used.

Are Zea Essentials listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)?

While some of our Zea Relief Kunzea Products are listed, our Zea Essentials are not. And quite honestly, there is no need for our essential oils to be TGA Listed.

Getting a product listed with the TGA is a very costly and time-consuming process (we know from first-hand experience!). This would significantly increase the price of our essential oils, without improving the quality or purity - as all our essential oils already go through strict quality assurance and testing protocols to ensure that they are all 100% clean and pure.

Have Zea products been tested on animals?

Absolutely not! We pride ourselves on being a completely cruelty-free brand.

Can I ingest Zea Essentials? Are they 'food grade' essential oils?

Due to the toxicity level of some constitutes in pure essential oils, we do not advocate or recommend that any are ingested. We can, however, assure you that our Zea Essentials are 100% pure, premium grade, organically sourced, and of equal (or better!) quality to other brands that claim that it is "safe" to ingest essential oils.

In fact, as an Australian business, it is against government regulation in this country for us to promote or prescribe essential oils for ingestion unless by a qualified health care practitioner or clinical aromatherapist who has knowledge of essential oil toxicology and an understanding of how essential oils interact with the body. If internal ingestion is administered incorrectly, it may result in health risks.

For more information on this topic, please read our blog post, "Understanding the Ingestion of Essential Oils".

Can I apply Zea Essentials topically on the skin undiluted?

There are certain essential oils that can be safely applied undiluted to the skin, however, as a blanket rule we do not recommend it for all Zea Essentials. Everyone's skin is unique and has varying levels of tolerance and sensitivity to the constituents embedded in different essential oils.

If you are going to try an essential oil undiluted, be sure to take care and consider patch testing first with a small amount on the inner forearm for any adverse reactions.

Can I use Zea Essentials safely with cats, dogs and other pets?

There is a lot of information on the internet being misconstrued around the use of essential oils with pets. While we absolutely agree that essential oils have the potential to be dangerous and toxic for pets, this is also the case for humans if safe practices are not followed.

When it comes to diffusing essential oils, we do not believe there are any essential oils in our Zea Essentials range you should actively avoid. Instead, we have four general rules we recommend to our customers. They are as follows:

  • Avoid continuously running the diffuser all day and all night
  • Ensure the room is well-ventilated with fresh air
  • Ensure your pet can leave the area that is being diffused if need be
  • Observe your pets response to new scents when trying an oil for the first time

As for ingestion and undiluted topical application of essential oils, we do not recommend or encourage either of these methods of use on pets. The most common risks that are involving the use of essential oils with pets, and in particular cats, come from the unsafe topical application of high doses of essential oils.

If used effectively, essential oils can in fact enhance the health and wellbeing of pets. It is becoming increasingly more popular for decreasing anxiety and promoting calmness in pets.

For those looking to learn more on the topic, here are two well written articles on the topic for "cats", but a lot of the information can be applied to other pets:

Zea Essentials cost less than other brands, how can you offer such affordable prices?

At Zea, we have established long-standing relations with our essential oil producers over the past 25 years. We pass this experience on to customers in the form of affordable pricing.

It is important to understanding that price is not necessarily correlated with quality when it comes to essential oils. We take great pride in producing premium essential oils and follow very strict quality assurance and testing protocols. We price our Zea Essentials with the best interest of our customers in mind. By not marking up our essential oils, as many competitors do, we can offer premium quality oils at an affordable price.

Are all Zea Essentials Made in Australia?

Where possible we source our pure essential oils from Australia, however, some oils (such as FrankincenseMay Chang and Patchouli) are not produced locally, so we responsibly source internationally from their native country of origin.

All testing, packaging, warehousing and distribution is conducted in Australia.

Are the farmers and producers of Zea Essentials well reimbursed?

For all our essential oils, we let the producers set rates per kilo based on their annual forecasts and yields, which is why our retail prices can occasionally fluctuate.

We never bargain with farmers at cheaper rates. As a fellow family business, we respect that the producers need to earn a certain amount from their harvests to maintain and grow their business and respective families/communities.

We then set our prices at a rate we believe is fair and reasonable, so that everyone can afford to use premium, therapeutic quality Zea Essentials.

Can you guarantee the quality of Zea Essentials?

Yes, we can. With 25+ years of experience in the natural health, aromatherapy and essential oil industry, we have a lot of confidence in our supplies from all over the world. All Zea Essentials are 100% pure, 100% clean, therapeutic quality essential oils.

Is the quality and purity of Zea Essentials the same as Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and other global corporations?

Zea is a very different type of business and have very different values to MLM companies and global corporations, so we don't like to make a direct comparison to other businesses. We also have not tested their oil for quality and purity.

However, we can guarantee that all our Zea Essentials are 100% pure and clean. We have strict quality control standards for testing the identity, purity, strength, and composition of all our essential oils.

In fact, in some cases, we source our Zea Essentials from the same producers as a lot of the major essential oil corporations from around the world. The main difference between us and well-known brands on the market is that it is only us - a small Australian family business - with 25+ years of experience in the industry. We don't have distributors and don't have our Zea Essentials available in many physical stores.

This understanding of the industry is why we can sell our premium essential oils at such an affordable price.

Do Zea Essentials have an expiry date?

Generally, the lifespan of an essential oil varies quite a lot. Oxygen, heat and light all affect the overall degradation of the oil - so storage is critical to its preservation. For example, Sweet Orange oxidises very quickly and has a shelf life of about 18-24 months, while Patchouli can get better with age.

Expiry dates and batch numbers are not mandatory on essential oils. However, we choose to include them on most of our Zea Essentials so that you have some idea of when the oil produced. It also helps us keep track of different batches and the testing results associated with each batch.

The expiry date should be treated as a guide only. We recommend that you use your own judgment before discarding an expired oil. You just may be discarding a perfectly good oil which has matured over time!

Are Zea Essentials diluted, adulterated or watered down?

No, every essential oil on our website is 100% pure and clean. This includes all of our Zea Lifestyle Blends and Chakra Blends.
